atkins diet uk Q&A

Anyone managed to successfully lose (a lot of) weight?

Hi,
I am 22 and I weigh just over 12 stone, I have always been big, but never as large as I am now.
I didn't really realise how fat I was until I went out to buy a bikini, tried it on at home, looked in that damn full length mirror and saw a load of jellified fat looking back at me.

I have tried dieting (atkins), eating healthily and crash dieting.
I have failed every single one. I try to avoid chocolate and crisps, but I live with 2 friends and they have a really fast metabolism, so the fridge is always stocked full of junk food and a few of my apples. But I just cannot stay away from the chocolate to get the apples.

Can anyone offer any advice?
Any websites or words of motivation that may help me?

Ideally, I'd like to weigh between 9-10 stone and be a dress size 10. (I am a 14/16 now, UK sizes.)

Many thanks.

I lost 80+ lbs eating my own modified version of Atkins/Low Carb. I found Atkins to be too high fat and South Beach more like what I want. I lost weight pretty quickly at first during the Atkins induction phase, and I went into it gradually, over a couple weeks, until I was into the induction phase completely. The weight loss was good, but better when I combined low-carb eating with a good bit of exercise, cardio and strength training.

I tried Atkins for a week on vacation with friend who were eating that way, and while I didn't lose much weight that week, I discovered that my fibromyalgia symptoms were greatly relieved and I wasn't in pain and had lots of energy, alertness, and slept better. I continued with the Atkins program for a couple months just for the fibromyalgia benefits, but dropped weight too, especially when I added the fitness regimen.

Alot of the weight came back when I was pregnant with my 3rd child 3 years ago, because at first I was told I couldn't eat a low-carb diet while pregnant. But I was gaining alot of weight eating like that, in more pain, and my BP was up a bit. Then one of the midwives said I COULD cut alot of carbs, as long as I was getting alot of veggies, and a little bit of grains and legumes, I'd be fine. Sure enough I quit gaining unnecessary weight! But I'm not finally getting back on track with diet and exercise because my husband has to do it too, for health reasons. The whole family must transform.

It sounds like you're probably in Great Britain, and I'm not sure if you can find a group, but try www.tops.org. TOPS--Taking Off Pounds Sensibly--is a great support group, older than Weight Watchers, and they do have chapters around the world. I loved the sense of family, commaradarie, humor, and compassionate help with weight loss. TOPS is more than just weighing in each week--members get rewarded for losses, and the group keeps track of all its statistics because the group can get rewarded as well from the TOPS organization. It's also much less expensive than Weight Watchers, since it's a non-profit organization. There are minimal annual membership dues ($20 or so here in the states), plus another $4 a month to cover the groups cost of meetings. If you don't have a chapter that meets near you, start your own. The website will have information regarding that.

Keep a journal. I don't just write down what I eat, but also my overall exercise routine, starting weight and measurements, weekly weigh-ins, monthly measurements, daily exercise log, and also include journal entries that allow me to just vent about trouble at home, what kinds of obstacles I'm encountering with the whole getting in shape thing, and so on. I also include how I feel emotionally and physically--important for the fibromyalgia, headaches, and any reactions to foods I might have.

Have two sets of goals. One set is long term, the overall end-result picture of yourself you want to see; be specific about the new you! The other set of goals is short term goals, today, next week, next month. Today my goal was to go for a walk and to add one extra vegetable serving, and to cut caffeinated coffee back by a cup. The goal for the week is to walk for 5 out of 7 mornings and to do ab and back exercises every day, plus my knee and foot physical therapy exercises (I have to get these in shape before I can re-start a more rigorous strength training regimen). For the month, I'm planning on losing at least 5 lbs., which should be easy to do, and if I go above it, it's icing on the cake.

It's hard with rooommates (or family members) who don't have to eat like you do or who don't want to. And learning to resist tempation is very difficult, especially if you don't have the ability to just keep the tempting stuff out of the house. Failure is part of success. Every time you slip up, restart the next meal or the next day. Keep restarting because it's the only way to create the new habit. Find a good support group! Good luck and good health to you!

what type of poem is this, like is it a ballad, a sonnet, a blank verse or a free verse, or it could be other?

The Diet That Works

Range Rover Rachel is preparing to pray
She checks her mascara, her hair seems okay
She assembles her prayer-stool, it's upholstered with wool
Her brown shiny knees won't become at all dull

Places prayer stool on carpet, it was made in Iran
Many coloured but subtle, won't compete with her tan
You can buy them mail-order, or online from Habitat
She prays for her midriff - three ounces of puppyfat

''Kensington, Atkins, high protein or none?
I've tried every diet but the lard hasn't gone
I've bought special devices, focus workout on tummies
I've tried to stop eating by sucking at dummies.''

Didn't expect an answer, but a vision she's seeing
Thank God for body-hugging, guaranteed panty-line free, super-absorbent undies, Rachel fears she is peeing
''YOU WONDER,'' says God, ''WHICH SCHEME MAKES YOU THINNER?
THE HUNGRY AND HOMELESS - INVITE THEM TO DINNER.''

It's obviously not a sonnet. A sonnet has just 14 lines, its meter is usually iambic pentameter, and it usually has a rhyme scheme different from the AABBCC. . . . scheme here.

Free verse doesn't use rhyme or meter, but this poem uses both.

Blank verse is unrhymed iambic pentameter. This poem uses rhyme and doesn't use iambic pentameter.

Look up "ballad." There's more than one definition, and you might feel that one of them fits this poem.
